In 1837, a young lieutenant named Robert E. Lee received the assignment to conduct a survey of the Des Moines Rapids, situated between Keokuk and Fort Madison. The primary objective was to identify a navigable channel that could accommodate the passage of ships carrying both goods and passengers through the challenging rapids. Although Lee's surveys did not uncover an ideal channel, the data he collected proved invaluable for the Heartland Research Group.
